Rattray’s on MalaMala is a traditional farmstead on the banks of the Sand River in the massive Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve. Adjacent to the Kruger National Park and brimming with luxury, the lodge is a fine combination of colonial elegance and African style.
The lodge has been built in the traditional farmstead style with low-angled corrugated iron roofs, colonnaded walkways and massive verandahs. The eight elevated bungalows have large private decks; plunge pools with views over the Sand River; twin bathrooms with an outdoor shower; and indoor and outdoor dining areas for those looking for something a little more romantic. There’s also a gym, a library crammed full of African literature and fine art, leather-bound bar and a sumptuous lounge; the large verandah leads down to the main swimming pool and the whole lot keeps an eye on the river in case any animals come for a drink.
With 20km of river frontage and a vast expanse of uninhabited wilderness, the wildlife and nature experiences at MalaMala are some of the world’s most spectacular. Wildlife activities include daily game drives, bush walks, night drives and stargazing. In addition to fascinating insight into the trees, reptiles and smaller creatures, frequent wildlife sightings include lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant, numerous antelope species, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hyena, jackal and the endangered wild dog and cheetah.
