Kruger Private Concessions
Private concession to Kruger Park: I’ll see your 2 million hectares… and I’ll raise you 20,000. Kruger Park to private concession: Too rich for me, man, too rich for me.
Dotted around the fringe of the southern and northern regions of the Kruger National Park are small – by comparison – private concessions with fenceless boundaries that allow the park’s famously prolific wildlife free roaming access.
The concessions have luxurious exclusive lodges and tented camps and are private reserves in every respect barring the fact that the gargantuan park surrounds them.
The Kruger Park is one of the country’s premier destinations and a wilderness and wildlife bonanza with more species of flora and fauna than a card shark’s tricks: 507 birds, 336 trees, 147 mammals, 114 reptiles, 49 fish and 34 amphibians.
The southern region, with slightly less severe weather is more popular and thus more developed; animals pose for shots and express disgust when you whip out anything less than a 300mm lens. Northwards, towards the Limpopo, the climate gets tougher and the wilderness gets wilder; the animals are a tad wary and don’t give a hoot whether you’ve got a 300mm lens or a 30cm ......
Most concessions have specialities, be they San rock art, cultural tours or particular species that are prolific in the area. The scenery varies as some concessions are in the hazy steamed mountains while others are in the sizzling deep-fried valleys.
